New regulation on processing crystalline silica substances in effect (1 September 2024)

As a result of a countrywide consensus that took place in February 2023, stringent stipulations for handling substances comprised of crystalline silica became enforced starting from 1st September 2024. Any material holding a minimum of one per cent crystalline silica by weight is regarded as a Crystalline Silica Substance (CSS).

The introduction of these enhanced provisions asserts that the management of CSS must be supervised across all sectors. Industries are now obligated to evaluate whether their processing tasks of CSS pose high risks prior to commencement. If deemed high risk, supplementary safety measures and a comprehensive risk control strategy, such as utilising Bluesafe SWMS (Safe Work Method Statements), must be implemented to mitigate potential health threats to employees and bystanders.

Further to this, organisations must adhere to pre-existing WHS Regulation stipulations, which require consideration of whether air quality monitoring and/or health surveillance is necessary. It’s recommended businesses utilize tools like Bluesafe WHS Management Systems to ensure compliance with these guidelines. This system can facilitate compliance, providing a seamless approach to worker safety by integrating WHS regulations into daily operations.
