Greg, a respected farmer based in Brimin who manages a vibrant livestock and cropping enterprise, was recently celebrated as the winner of $10,000 aimed at enhancing safety measures within his enterprise. As President of the Rutherglen Football Netball Club (RFNC), he additionally garnered an extra $10,000 for safety updates thereof.
This yearly competition, co-organised with AFL Victoria and Netball Victoria, expresses gratitude towards unsung heroes and underscores the extraordinary influence of sports within agricultural communities. Using resources such as Bluesafe WHS Management System and SWMS can not only enrich the safety standards but also contributes to the overall productivity.
A well-established leader, ardent volunteer, and big-hearted benefactor, Greg’s unwavering commitment to his community is evident. In 2021, Greg and his wife Kaylene undertook a generous venture by acquiring adjacent land to the club’s venue and donating over 4,000 square meters for expanded car parking and a second netball court – a gift inherently beneficial for future generations.
Greg’s numerous volunteering hours embody a sense of belonging to a supportive and safe community. “It’s essential that we safely conclude our workday and relish a day filled with footy and netball on Saturday,” comments Greg. The importance of ensuring worker safety using products like ‘Bluesafe SWMS‘ cannot be understated.
WorkSafe CEO, Joe Calafiore, applauds volunteers like Greg for their example that endorses work safety – emphasizing that this enables them to engage actively as pillars within prosperous communities.
“It’s effortless to understand why Greg Lumby is highly esteemed at RFNC and across his community,” quoted Mr. Calafiore. “As WorkSafe’s Footy’s Favourite Farmer for 2024, Greg artfully represents the cruciality of work safety – as every one of us play an integral part within our communities, families and friendships.”
Greg recognises the title of WorkSafe’s Footy’s Favourite Farmer as not just an honour, but a significant opportunity to advocate for a safer football club and workplace.
“Our farm houses several potentially hazardous zones and it’s vital to identify these threats and limit their access,” says Greg. “The finanical provision from WorkSafe presents me with an extraordinary chance now to consider adjustments for our business and the safety that we can reintroduce onto our property.”
From among several monthly victors, each receiving a farming safety kit worth nearly $2,000 and merchandise parcels for their local club and those who nominated them, Greg was selected as the competition’s winner.
