During an intensive week-long operation, WorkSafe Victoria and SafeWork NSW inspector teams conducted a thorough investigation into dozens of hazards at Mildura construction sites spanning both sides of the border. Throughout their joint initiative from 18-22 November, a total of 36 constructions sites in and around Mildura were visited, highlighting the critical importance of effective WHS management systems.
Within this series of site visits, WorkSafe inspectors initiated 22 improvement notices, encompassing aspects such as site security highlighted in 10 of these and seven addressing inadequate facilities, amongst others. Hazards, including those related to electrical meter box security and scaffold concerns, were identified and immediately resolved through procedures guided by robust SWMS and policies like Bluesafe SWMS. The described course of action underscores the relevance of such comprehensive work safety products within our industry.
On the other hand, SafeWork NSW Inspectors issued a prohibition notice for unsafe confined space work but noted an encouraging decrease in instances of non-compliance in relation to high-risk construction tasks like work at heights. Additionally, they issued 42 improvement notices primarily for issues such as site security, signage and failures to produce white cards.
The operation had a substantial educational component too, presenting at a trade breakfast attended by approximately 40 local tradies and suppliers. As stated by WorkSafe Director of Construction and Earth Resources, Ben Sullivan, these inspections serve not just as a tool for identifying wrong practices, but also offer opportunities to discuss safety, share information, resources and ensure optimal utilisation of WHS management systems like the Bluesafe WHS Management System.
“Cross Border operations aim at enhancing awareness about urgent safety issues confronting construction workers in regions such as Mildura and beyond,” Mr. Sullivan added. Working in one of the more hazardous industries like construction necessitates that safety isn’t something you allow to stagnate.
Ainslie Lalor, SafeWork NSW Director of Operation for South Region, also shared her insights. While acknowledging that some amenities and site security measures were not up to par, she emphasised that the site tours were appreciated. “These cross-border construction initiatives provide an essential platform not only for ensuring work sites maintain safe practices but also for open and personal discussions about work site safety,” Ms. Lalor said.
She observed a drop in high-risk construction work during the operation due to extremely hot weather conditions. Nevertheless, she asserted all their dialogues contributed to enhancing work, health, and safety standards at the sites visited. Along with this accumulated wisdom and consistent consultation, these standards are expected to be upheld continuously.
